FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Aren't goths supposed to hate the outdoors?
Says who? We've found a rather large group of people in the
Seattle-area who enjoy getting out of the house, out of the
clubs, and into the woods. We've made better friends, had better
times, and acquainted more than a handful of newbies to the GG
way.
So, what is it that you do, then?
It depends on the season, but here's a sample of just some of the
things that our members are interested in: skiing, snowboarding,
hiking, camping, sailing, fishing, rock climbing, orienteering,
kayaking, snowshoeing, white-water rafting, horseback riding,
backpacking, and our favorite - the art of outdoor cuisine.
Does it cost anything to be a Granola Goth?
No, but the people who run GG do have expenses, namely the web
site hosting. If every Granola Goth donated $2/year, it would
keep the site running without drilling a hole in the webmistress'
wallet. If you find this site useful, you can make a direct
donation to our Dreamhost account, here.
What is "Leave No Trace?"
"Leave No Trace" is the policy of having the lowest possible
(zero) impact on your environment. It means forethought in your
preparations (minimal packaging, biodegradeable soaps, burnable
waste - all the way down to properly disposing of the toilet
paper you use). In a group of people who rely on the parks and
wilderness for recreation and entertainment, it is important that
we do our best to preserve our resources for future use. In
addition, many of us support initiatives and organizations that
protect the land we share. More information on Leave No Trace
policies can be found on the official web site, www.lnt.org.
What is "Oontzville?"
Oontzville is our 'default' camp site - where we go when we
haven't planned to go elsewhere. The name is a case of "you had
to be there." Our regular campsite nicknames are given like any
good nickname - one just comes along, and it sticks. You just
don't mess with a force like that. Our second spot has recently
been christened "New Spork, New Spork."
I'm new to the group, and I don't know what to
bring.
Please check the general gear lists. Know the "Ten Essentials."
Be sure you have shelter and appropriate clothing. If you chip in
some cash toward the large group meals (generally carnivorous),
your nutritional needs will be more than met. Other questions can
be directed to the GG Mailing list.
Tell me more about the mailing list.
You are referring to the Granola Goth Discussion List. It is a
moderated, local, low-traffic list, for goths in the
Seattle-area. Most discussion covers old events, new events, and
buying and maintenance of various equipment. We encourage
everyone to be active participants. We've removed the link to the subscription page due to a high volume of spam-related subscription requests. Please contact the admin for more information if you would like to join.
What's the deal with the Demerit Badges?
We have a habit of good times and silly antics. The Badges are
just our way of commemorating some of our more memorable hijinks.
Most are cases of "had to be there."
Why aren't there more trip reports and photo galleries for
recent trips?
Granola Goth has actually grown, and people have continued to be
active with smaller groups. Most of us have chosen to host photos
on their own web spaces and review their trips in their own
weblogs. As of April 2006, the webmaster is working on a
permalinks list to various blogs and galleries, so we can still
keep track off all the awesome things we're doing.
